AWS IoT Enterprise Button – Manage AWS IoT Buttons with ZipLine

Running a “limited preview” for new technology can be like working the door at a hot new club. With enterprises clamoring to place orders for the first fleets of Amazon Web Services (AWS) IoT Button devices under the new Enterprise IoT Button program, it will be exciting to see who gets “inside” first. Complete with pre-provisioned certificates and keys, custom-branded AWS IoT Buttons will be deployed in production quantities of 10,000 buttons and up, distributed throughout each selected enterprise.

Getting Started with AWS IoT Buttons

The AWS IoT Button, also known as a Cloud Programmable Dash Button, connects securely with TLS to AWS IoT over wi-fi and sends data to the AWS IoT Device Gateway when the button is pressed (either once, twice, or a long press). From there, the Rules Engine evaluates each message (JSON) and takes the appropriate action, such as sending alerts via Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS), storing objects in Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), or invoking AWS Lambda functions that call other cloud services. The AWS IoT Button was originally released at re:Invent in 2015, and the device reportedly sold out within hours of the announcement. Both Gen 1 and Gen 2 AWS IoT Buttons (With the AWS IoT logo) are currently available for individual purchase at $14.99 and $19.99 each, respectively. In their blog post announcing the AWS IoT Button Enterprise Program, there is a step-by-step walkthrough leveraging the AWS IoT Getting Started Guide for creating your first AWS IoT Button solution and making service or supply requests via SNS when the button is pressed. Additionally, there is the Amazon Web Services IoT Button mobile app (for Android and iPhone), as well as an AWS Lambda Blueprint Wizard that will create the required AWS IoT resources for you and add an event source to your button that automatically invokes a new Lambda function.

Introducing ZipLine for Rapid Enterprise AWS IoT Button Deployment

There’s a lot you can do with a handful of AWS IoT Buttons. To accelerate the value of IoT Buttons in the enterprise, leverage the wider range of advanced Amazon Web Services offerings. This includes AWS Machine Learning and QuickSite, and integrate more fully with existing enterprise backend systems and workflows via Amazon Kinesis and Lambda, Bright Wolf has announced the release of ZipLine, an instant-on, no code required application for deployment of multi-tenant AWS IoT Enterprise Button solutions at scale. An AWS IoT Button Manager for the Enterprise, ZipLine is powered by Bright Wolf’s IoT data management platform accelerator on top of AWS Cloud infrastructure. At a high level, ZipLine provides a visual interface for rapid creation and configuration of organizations and IoT Buttons. Administrators can create and manage organizations, sites, and specific locations, create button types and events, and assign physical IoT Buttons to logical roles and locations. Notifications and other device integrations come pre-configured out-of-the-box using AWS Lambda, Kinesis, SNS, and SQS. Built-in dashboards and reports feature multi-level geographic map views including floor plans, and configurable alerts can be set for each button type to get the right information to the right people at the right time. Clickable drill-downs for organizations, sites, buttons, and event types highlight real-time issues and time series insights, and the remaining useful life calculator enables predictive ordering of replacement buttons prior to physical button failure.

Fully contextualized button events via Kinesis and Lambda

Most important to creating value for the Enterprise, ZipLine provides fully contextualized button events via Kinesis and Lambda to integrated enterprise systems. In many cases, enterprises will distribute buttons to their customers’ sites and integrate with those systems as well. Building management companies, franchise organizations, and other service providers may have multiple customers with their own end users, and each must only have access to data from buttons deployed at their own respective locations. Customizable user interface branding and user management with granular access controls across organizations and roles allow each customer to run their own branded dashboards for their employees, while enabling the enterprise to easily manage a single multi-tenant environment and monitor activity across the board. aws iot buttons zipline architecture

IoT Data Management

At a deeper level, ZipLine is an example of how Bright Wolf’s IoT Data Management platform eliminates the complexity inherent in all large-scale IoT systems, with buttons being a simple proxy for all sorts of devices and machines with wide ranges of sensors and purposes. Incoming IoT data is normalized, cleaned, and shaped for use by downstream systems. Granular permissions at the data point level enable multi-tenancy and user role management. And complete device lifecycle management, with physical inventory being associated with logical buttons (or other equipment) in the system enabling seamless assignments and replacements of devices over time.
