Bright Wolf Supports AWS Greengrass for Increasing Intelligence at the Edge

Originally announced for preview at re:Invent last November in Las Vegas, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially made Greengrass available to all customers at their launch event in San Francisco. At Bright Wolf, we look forward to Greengrass integration for enhancing and simplifying capabilities at the edge in our large-scale industrial AWS IoT deployments.

“AWS Greengrass extends the power of the cloud to the edge, accelerating IoT adoption in the enterprise by enabling value creation at all points in the IoT ecosystem. Greengrass enables our global industrial customers to deploy local decision-making and data management at the edge, via robust local compute and caching.” – Peter Bourne, Bright Wolf CEO

The promise of Greengrass fits well into our enterprise client deployments in the following ways:

  • Enabling variation in protocol interfaces at the edge across PLCs while maintaining a single standard for data ingest in complex manufacturing environments.
  • Dynamically adjust machine behaviors using Lambda at the edge in multi-variant agriculture deployments.
  • Increasing reliability of data integrity and transfer in remote mining and oil/gas production scenarios with intermittent connectivity to the cloud.

As described in the AWS announcement, Greengrass lets you run local compute, messaging, data and state synchronization for connected devices in a secure way. AWS Greengrass authenticates and encrypts device data at all points of connection using AWS IoT’s security and access management capabilities With AWS Greengrass, connected devices can run AWS Lambda functions, keep device data in sync, and communicate with other devices securely – even when not connected to the Internet. Using AWS Lambda, Greengrass ensures your IoT devices can respond quickly to local events, operate with intermittent connections, and minimize the cost of transmitting IoT data to the cloud. For a step-by-step “Getting Started” guide, Chief Evangelist Jeff Barr posted a detailed article showing how to take advantage of Greengrass using an example on a Rasbperry Pi device. The launch event featured public support for Greengrass from a number of Forbes Global 2000 companies, including Pentair, an organization dedicated to building a safer, more sustainable world through industry-leading products, services, and solutions.

“Some of Pentair’s aquaculture customers are located in remote geographies with unreliable internet connections, and industry regulations restrict which data points can leave their physical premises. AWS Greengrass will enable our devices to behave consistently no matter the level of connectivity in their operating environment, while allowing us to take advantage of the AWS Cloud for machine learning and big data analytics.” – Phil Rolchigo, Vice President of Technology at Pentair
